Beyonce, that is all. -Sarah Landis

So I’m going to go out on a limb and say that most people have already seen Beyonce’s new video for her song “Formation”. What a cool video. But I don’t see why there needs to be controversy around it. I get that a statement is trying to be made, but at the same time, that is Beyonce’s image, that’s what her fan base wants. She’s also using her music as a gateway to make a powerful statement, to get through to people who may not otherwise listen. This is the same issue that the Grammy’s were struggling with, kinda. Black producers being eclipsed by white producers for equivalent talent, to put it bluntly.

I commend Bey for making such a bold statement and not being afraid to potentially cause chitter chatter about said statement. She isn’t worried about her reputation or her fame being tarnished for using her power to stand up for something she cares about; rather she uses her leverage and stands prepared to embrace the backlash for what she fights for. Other artists like Kendrick or J.Cole are known and rap about issues as well, but they’re still up and coming. Bey has a name for herself as she is also married to powerhouse Jay Z and I think it’s great that she isn’t afraid to give the people what they (don’t) want.

Here’s the link to the video if you haven’t seen it. Even if you dislike the message, aesthetically, the video is great as well. Formation
