My hate of the ruralcoms genre

Rural sitcoms are the exact opposite type of sitcom i ever found enjoyable. They enforce social norms and stereotypes that do nothing but damage society and perpetuate falsities. As a sociology major, these ruralcoms upset me. They lack complexity and to me are very boring because they are so cookie cutter and unoriginal. It’s like the saying “You’ve seen one you’ve seen them all!” For example when Doris Day acted as a feminist and made it seem like as a woman being a feminist was a very dumb  crazy idea for her. She acted as if being a feministic woman is a crime when in reality any woman that isn’t a supporter of women’s rights is thoroughly confused. I would like to make this a conversation!!! What are your opinions on ruralcoms? Interesting? Ignorant?

One of the things I think is very interesting about that episode, “The Feminist,” is that Doris Martin had already read the book and said there were some things about it she agreed with then went on to act so EXTREME and (I thought) insulting. Good post.

I see what you mean about rural sitcoms enforcing stereotypes and being ignorant. However, I think an argument that could be made that the comedy and entertainment comes from how ridiculously the stereotypes are portrayed. To some this may be seen as funny. -Emily Elliott
