After watching the episodes from Cybill and Sex and the City, I started to realize the distinction between the representations of male vs. female sexual desires and how this is problematic. First, there is no doubt that women are underrepresented when it comes to this topic. It is not uncommon for there to be multiple shows running with a male lead who cannot control their sexual impulses. Focusing more on Sex and the City, I found the show to be groundbreaking in some senses due to the fact that it centers around four female characters who are open about their sex lives (to an extent more than we have seen yet). Although this comes along with obvious ties to consumerism, I found the show to be a good change of pace. Moving forward, one cannot forget how media manipulates its viewers, and in my opinion I found it difficult to look past the show’s ties to consumerism.
